II-G. SARAH "Sallie" L. SIBERT (1843 – 1923), daughter of George Sibert² (John David¹)

Sarah Sibert was born on 13 February 1843 in Abbeville County, South Carolina. [1][2][3] She died on 3 December 1923, age 80, at the home of her son George in Charleston, Charleston County, South Carolina. [2][3][4] She married Lemuel L. Guffin on 26 April 1865. [1][2] Lemuel was the son of Charles B. and Jane Guffin. He was born on 28 April 1844 in South Carolina. [3] He died on 23 May 1889. [3] Sarah and Lemuel are buried in the Beaufort Baptist Cemetery in Beaufort, Beaufort County, South Carolina.

Sarah L. Guffin's death certificate says her father's name was Sibert. [4]

Lemuel was the brother of Sarah's brother-in-law, Lawrence Pembroke Guffin. According to the census, in 1850, Lawrence P., aged four, and Lemuel, aged six, lived with their siblings and parents, Charles B. and Jane Guffin, in Savannah River Regiment, Abbeville County. [5]

Lemuel enlisted as a private in Company K of the Second South Carolina Rifles at Adams Run, Charleston County, South Carolina on 18 May 1862 for three years or the war. He appears on the muster roll for May and June. After that, he was home on a sick furlough, and by the end of 1862, had been discharged by the medical board in Columbia. [6]

In 1870, L.L., aged 25, and Sallie, aged 24, lived next to Lemuel's brother Pem in Abbeville with their children Chas., age four, and W[illegible], aged two. Lemuel was a city auditor. He had real estate worth 3,000 dollars and a personal estate of 400 dollars. [5]

In 1880, Lem L., aged 35, and Sarah, aged 34, lived with their children, Chas. M., aged 14; Eula W., aged 12; and Geo. E., aged ten, and Lem's brother Wm. C. in Abbeville, Abbeville County. Lem was a farmer and the children attended school. They were all born in South Carolina. [5]

Lemuel was a customs inspector in Charleston in 1881. [7]

In 1900, Sarah was a widow living with her son-in-law William B. Nipson, her daughter Eula, and their two children on Main Street in Summerville, Dorchester County, South Carolina. She had had three children, and they were all living. [5]

According to her obituary, Sarah Sibert Guffin had three children: Dr. Charles M. Guffin, Willie Eulalia Guffin, and George Elliott Guffin. The first died shortly before she did; the last two survived her. [2]

Children of Lemuel L. Guffin and Sarah Sibert:

II-G-1. Dr. Charles M. Guffin, M.D. was born on 16 or 20 May 1866 in Abbeville county. [3][4] He died, unmarried, of diabetes on 11 June 1923, age 57, in Charleston. [3][4] He is buried in the Beaufort Baptist Cemetery. [3]

Charles's death certificate says he was the son of L.L. and Sally (Sibert) Guffin. He was a physician. [4]

Charles graduated from the Medical College of South Carolina in Charleston in 1893. [8]

II-G-2. Willie Eulalia Guffin was born in June 1869 in Grays Hill, Abbeville County, South Carolina. [3] She died on 8 December 1953 at the home of her daughter Mrs. Ruth Conklin of Miami. [9] She is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park in West Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida. [3] She married William Berry Nipson of Palm Beach. [2] William was born in March 1862 in Charleston. He died on 6 February 1939 in Fellsmere, Indian River County, Florida. [10]

According to the census, in 1900, William B., born in March 1862, and Eula W., born in June 1869, lived in Summerville with their children, Charles W., born in February 1891, and Sarah R., born in April 1893, and Eula's mother, Sarah Guffin, born in February 1845[!]. They were all born in South Carolina. William was an engineer; he and Eula had been married 11 years; Eula had had two children. [5]

William was the Everglades drainage district dredge superintendent. [10]

Children:

• Charles William Nipson was born on 4 February 1891 in Beaufort. He died in July 1974. [11] He married Bessie J. Compton on 6 April 1912 in St. Lucie County, Florida. [12]
  
  Charles's (delayed) birth certificate says he was the son of William Berry Nipson, born in Charleston, and Willie Eulalie Guffin, born in Grays Hill, Abbeville. [13]
  
  In 1940, C.W., aged 49, and Bessie J., aged 45, lived in Boynton, Palm Beach County, with their children W.R., aged 25, and George N., aged 18. Charles owned a garage, Bessie provided help to the garage office, and W.R. was an attendant at a filling station. [5]

  • William R. Nipson was born about 1915. He died in 1973 and is buried in the Hillcrest Memorial Park. [3]
    
    
  • George Newfield Nipson was born about 1922. He married Virginia Ann, the daughter of Carl L. Tipton, on 6 August 1947 in Dayton, Ohio. She was born on 22 August 1923 and died on 3 September 1979 in Michigan. [14]
    
    
• Sarah Ruth Nipson was born in April 1893. She married H.S. Conklin. [10]

II-G-3. George Elliott Guffin was born on 13 July 1870 in South Carolina. [3][4] He died of a stroke on 4 October 1928, age 58, in Charleston. [3][4] He married Harriet "Hattie" Crocker. [3] Hattie was the daughter of Daniel and Julia (Johnson) Crocker. [4] She was born on 14 January 1887 in Beaufort and died on 24 May 1943 in Charleston. [3][4] George and Hattie are buried in the Beaufort Baptist Cemetery. [3]

George's death certificate says that he was the son of L.L. and Sarah L. (Siebert) Guffin. He was a machinist. [4]

Children:

• Charles Marion Guffin was born on 6 October 1905 in Beaufort, South Carolina. [4] He died of heart disease on 5 April 1958, age 52, in Charleston. [4] He married Thelma Wise. [4]
  
  Charles's death certificate says he was the son of George Elliott and Hattie (Crawford[!]) Guffin. He was a lieutenant in the police department at the naval shipyard. [4]
  
  
• George Elliott Guffin was born on 14 June 1907. [3] He died on 4 February 1972. [3] He married Bertha Mae Plowden. [3] She was born on 30 May 1909 and died on 25 February 1990. [3] George and Bertha are buried in the Carolina Memorial Park in North Charleston. [3]

  • George Elliott Guffin was born on 22 June 1931 and died on 6 January 2020. [3] He married Frances Watson. [3] She was born on 12 November 1925 and died on 21 October 2015. [3] George and Frances are buried in the Jessamine Cemetery in Ridgeland, Madison County, Mississippi. [3]
    
    
• Mary Louise Guffin was born on 14 June 1910 in Charleston. [4] She died of a heart attack on 11 September 1969, age 59, in Charleston. [4] She married Julius P. Oliver, Sr. [4] He survived her. [4]
  
  Mary Louise's death certificate says she was the daughter of George E. and Hattie (Crocker) Guffin, Sr. [4]
